The child of carpet mill workers who struggled to make ends meet, I learned the value of hard work and gained the determination to make education my top priority.
Always remembering where I came from and wanting to help others, I participated in community service projects throughout my collegiate career. In addition to serving in Student Government and as an officer in the African-American Culture Society, I was extremely active with First South Florida Congress #2 YWA and Junior Women Auxiliaries where I served as President.
My interest in the political process started in High School where I was active with the NAACP and Florida Voter’s League, registering voters and encouraging participation. My involvement in the community and in politics continues with my active participation in the Central Florida Urban League, Habitat for Humanity, Democratic Executive Committee, Democratic Women’s Club, Young Democrats, Democratic Black Caucus, and National Organization for Women.
Throughout my life, I have shown a commitment to identifying issues and solving them. I have been described by my peers as a “leader” and a “results oriented” person. I have shown a commitment to getting things done and making my environment a better place to live, work and play.
Now I need your help to continue serving our community in the Florida House of Representatives. Please take a moment to see where I stand on the issues facing Florida, volunteer for our campaign, and to make a contribution to our efforts to restore service and civility to Tallahassee.
Born in Orlando, Florida, I graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. It was there where I met my husband, Duncan Garbutt. We find strength in our abiding faith and are members of the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Orlando. |
